Meeting in New York

A meeting of the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities of Cyprus was held on November 18 in New York. Of course, at the root of this meeting did not make any changes. Nevertheless, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stressed that both sides had learned the main thing: how important it is to speed up the negotiations on the merger.

The secretary general was also informed about the progress of negotiations and agreements reached on the most controversial issues, such as the quota for the stay of Turkish citizens on the island (50,000 people), the replaceable presidency of the representatives of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, property rights for refugees both parts of the island.
Ban Ki-moon, in his speech, made it clear to both leaders that the UN expects both sides to fulfill their obligations.
His statement that both parties should “fulfill their obligations” essentially equated the Republic of Cyprus to the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, which caused understandable bewilderment among Cypriot politicians: the advantage should be on the side of the Republic of Cyprus, since the facts of the invasion , the occupation and annexation of the island has long been recognized at the official level by the international community.
In turn, the community leaders of Cyprus promised to accelerate the protracted negotiation process. The next meeting with Christofias and Eroglu Secretary General was scheduled for January. “During this time, leaders will work on the main points of disagreement,” said Ban Ki-moon. “This, in turn, will help the UN determine the next steps for itself.” A solution that would suit both parties can be found.
On the eve of this trip, President Dimitris Christofias declared that he was not going to make concessions. Just like Dervish Eroglu, during the celebration of the 27th anniversary of the “independence of the“ TRNC ”” a few days earlier, he said in a welcoming speech that “in 1974, new borders appeared in Cyprus, which cannot be changed.” Thus, until the agreement between the TRNC and the Republic of Cyprus is not reached, so the Cyprus property market does not expect any shocks.
