For many years, the capital of the island of Cyprus, Lefkosia, has held the first place in the number of low-rise buildings among the capitals of the European Union countries. The thing is that Cyprus still has a law prohibiting the construction of buildings of more than 12 floors. Recently, however, the island’s authorities have thought that it is necessary to keep up with the times, and in January-February 2011 they published new building rules in major cities.
Even the first swallows of indulgences have already appeared. Recently, a 40-story skyscraper project was approved for Nicosia Landmark, to be implemented by a joint Japanese-Cypriot company. This skyscraper will be located in the central part of the capital opposite Starbuck’s Cafe. One of the Limassol companies also intends to erect a 25-storey building right on the embankment of the city. Larnaca does not want to fall behind the leaders. There are already plans to build two towers of 25 floors in Finikoudes Alley. So property in Cyprus will become more diverse.
However, despite the current trends, the authorities of the island promised to closely monitor that when choosing a site for new high-altitude projects, all local realities were taken into account: for example, ensuring sufficient parking spaces for projects.
